Hello, this is Cheryl. Many of you are curious about how the first visit will be, I hope this will help to give you an idea of how our session will begin.  You are always welcomed to drop me an email or WhatsApp messages if you have more doubts or questions about how my therapy works. Choosing the right therapist for you, your relationship and family is very important! I encourage you all to spend time to talk to the therapists you have short-listed and get to feel the experience talking to him/her before you decide. 

To start, a comprehensive preliminary assessment will be carried out to have a wider understanding of what has happened in your life, your background history and present concerns. This is crucial for me to be mindful of the mental health and safety risks, trauma, culture as well as medical condition that you and your loved ones have prior to me speaking to you all. I usually take time to study these intake responses and will bring that brief understanding to the room.  

However, these assessments do not define you, your relationship and your family.  What is more important is for us to pay attention to how your emotional processing works. I adopt client-centered, humanistic and experiential approach as the fundamental approach for all my therapy sessions, regardless if it is for individual, couple or family. My other two main modalities are Emotion Focused Therapy and Multigenerational Family Therapy. I believe that everyone has their innate ability to grow and heal provided with an empathetic connection that is safe to explore and process the emotional pain that they face in the past and present. I see myself as the facilitator of your emotional process, who work closely with you  on transform your maladaptive emotions to adaptive ones. To be more precise, to transform the unresolved emotions embedded in the self-self and relational context are the key areas that we will be working on. 

 

I believe that achieving  long term, deep rooted transformational changes in emotions is more meaningful and sustainable than learning coping strategies for symptomatic changes. Hence, transformational changes are what I aim to achieve with you and your loved ones in sessions. So that when you all are faced with the same triggers or obstacles you naturally do not feel the same as before, do not respond in the same dysfunctional or disconnected patterns but being able to re-connect with the self and others in a healthier and closer way. 

 Even though EFT and multigenerational family therapy are my main modality, I sometimes too utilize techniques from various different modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, Choice Theory Reality Theory or Behavioural Modification for specific needs. Different techniques and skills would be adopted too depending on emotional, mental and relational states of my clients at different phases of their therapeutic journey. 

It is essential to keep in mind that therapy is not a magic pill or a quick fix, it is also not a teaching class, therapy is an experiential healing process that necessitates participation and investment from you and the important people who are in the system. It takes time, compassion, and acceptance. And I will be there alongside with you all in this therapeutic journey. In the end, making small changes to self-defeating behavior and destructive relational behaviours and eventually transforming overwhelming feelings of sadness, fear, shame and pain can bring life-changing and meaningful transformation. Don't underestimate the therapeutic work you do to yourselves. Sometimes, you may be the first warrior who puts a stop to the unhealthy multigenerational cycle which has run in the family.
